Rufus Woods
Just the Job are proud to be involved with the development of a new community woodland in Richmond.
Rufus Woods, was created to mark the 950th anniversary of the founding of Richmond. Just the Job help manage the wood. Its location within walking distance to the Gallowfields business estate and residential areas makes it an important new asset to both residents and the local workforce of Richmond.
Trees can be sponsored to help support the growth of Rufus Woods.
The Goal
Create a new community woodland for the people of Richmond and the surrounding area:
- A natural space where people can play, walk, think, learn, relax
- Together or alone
- Dogs welcome
- Easy access for all ages and abilities
- Doing good for the planet – carbon positive and assisting in flood & water management
- Enhances the landscape and natural biodiversity of the area
- A habitat for wildlife and native species to thrive
What will happen in the space?
Over time we will develop spaces and structures to enable a variety of activities
Play
Plant formed tunnels, dens, labyrinth using hazel, willow; Music making – using woodland instruments; Stumpery; Tactile wood sculptures or carvings; Interactive info boards/games/treasure hunts
WALK
Meandering loops; Maze like wanders– some key paths maintained, others just single person animal tracks and more adventurous
THINK
Clearings; Log seating; Views – inside the wood of key features and from the woodland edge south to the town & castle; Nature inspired sculptures
LEARN
Woodland heritage crafts; Coppice production; Bush craft skills; Courses & events; Food from the woods – foraging
RELAX
Performance space – poetry, storytelling, music; Wildlife hide
